April 28. 12-tm SUNDAY amusements IN NEW YORK From the New York Times. I aiu very Ibnd of music, especially of saured music. 1 like sacred music principally on account of its heavy bass. For, musically, not morally, speaking, the whole tenor of my life has been ba.se. Accordingly, on noticing by an advertise ment in the Herald, that a sacred concert was to be given at the Volks' Lrarten on Sunday evening, I determined to go. This determination was strengthened by the announcement that the young lady attendants were the prettiest in the City. Can you conceive of any bait at which a saint would be more apt to bite than at such a fly as this—body of sacred music; wings of gauze, feath- I era and flounces; and well-proportioned ankles for I the feet? It is needles.s to say that the subscriber I snapped like a trout at a June bug! I At a moderately early hour, I presented my- ! self at the door of the Volks’ Garten. The con- i cert had already commenced, and I could distin- i guish the refrain of a popular anthem as 1 enter ed. The refrain is a.s follows; from its beauty I and simplicity it is undoubtedly familiar to the • ear of all: 1 “Fare you well, my Mary Ann, I 1 am bound for the sea.” I It may be argued that there was nothing par- ; ticularly .sacred about it; but tastes differ, and it*is I not well to be too critical. fjr^E beg to call the attention of our friends and the * Before the music had well ceased, I began to public to the above notice, particularly those | look around for the beautiful lady attendants, tributary to Norfolk. IV. .iABREWS,. , }L\RKET i^QUARE. ! Oct’r 4 t- Bv good fortune I fell in with an English friend by the name of Cockneyman, who is a regular frequenter of these sacred concerts, and who kindly volunteered to show me through the walks of the Garden. I found the audience to be composed of what my friend Cockneyman termed “'alf and ’alf,” that is, equally made up of Germans and Americans. The former were chiefly employed in the consumption of lager, pretzels, a peculiarly odorous species of cheese, bologna sausages and a variety ot other delicate edibles; the Americans mostly devoted their time to Tivoli, and the other amusements which bloomed in the Garden. As amusements may seem somewhat out of place in a sacred concert room, I will explain for the bene fit of the proprietors. They are merely thrown in to break the monotony of the evening. Tivoli is an innocent little game, in which you send a ball spinning among a lot of pins, holesrand traps. Each pin, hole and trap counts a certain number, which, if touched by the ball, is placed to the credit of the player. You are admitted into the game on the payment of five cents; aoy number may play that choose; and the winner—the indi vidual that makes the greatest count—takes two- thirds ot the money, the balance going to the Tivoli machine. We invested several little five cent pieces that had never before been spent, in this game, but our success was not in any instance such a.s to encourage u.s to continue the amuse ment. Divers stalls had unfolded themselves in the Garden, with a show-case on each stall containing a variety of articles, and the laconic intelligence, “Every throw wins.” On inquiry I learned that for 25 cents any individual had the privilege oi shaking a box containing eight dice, and deposit ing the contents on the show-case, aft^r which event he is entitled to the “prize” placed on the number corresponding with his throw. The pro prietors ot these institutions set forth the fact that some of these prizes amount in value to over ! SI 00; but examination discloses the fact that these j valuable prizes arc placed on number 8 or 48, consequently the player must throw either eight aces or eight sixes to win anything worth having, as th3 intermediate numbers only ; bring him a ginger-bread stud, a set of brass but- i tons, or a tin comb. -After a matheinaiiual cal- j culution, which disolose l the fact that a maii’.s I chances for obtaining one of these miraculous ! prizes was about equal to the contingency ol his j being struck by lightning if he stjod in the mi«i- i die of the street, we determined not to invest and ' pa.v-ifd on. A shooting-gallery next ofi’ered itt> attractions. Air-guns were the implements iu use, and “two : .shots only cost thr«e cents.” We determined to i shoot. Cockneyman shot first, and succeeded in planting the bu let in the back of the boy that at tended the target. The gun made no report, but we three “went off” simultaneously as well as si lently. Cockneyman attributed thus misfortune to , the fact that the “hair-gun had an ’air trigger.” j I n stairs tiiere was an equestrian display some- ' tiling after tiie fashion of the old-time tourna ments. For the payment of a small .sum you are permitted to mount the platform and seat your- .self on a wooden horse. At a given signal the platform is made to revolve by the application ot man power, and of course you and your horse go i with it. Each equestrian is furnished with a miniature lance, and after his steed has attained a ct'Ttain degree ot momentum he spears at r stnall iron ring, and if dexterous enough bears it I away on the poin; of his poker. In es.^aying to i perform this feat, 1 was so unfortunate jts to in troduce the point of my lance in the lett eye of the individual that supplied the rings, 'i here upon he delivered himself ot a huge nine-corner ed oatii in Dutch; not i» Amsterdam Dutch, nor in Rotterdam Dutch, hut in the other dam Dutch. He also inquired ii I meant to be personal. To which I replied that this was a free country, and that if I had offended him, I was perfectly willing to accept any apology which he might make. Shortly thereafter a waiter came to me, and in quired if I would leave the Volks’ Garten, to re ceive a mes-^age from his friend. I replied that enra"-ements ot a domestic nature would prevent my leaving, but that I would receive and read any message there, except a President’s message. This reply was followed by a noU), which. 1 Could not read, requesting me to name “time, place and wejipons." To which [ laconically re plied, “Now—here—harpoons.” It was my in tention ta back out if 1 could; if Oiis was im- povssible, to fight foot to foot, muzsie to muzzle, and get the first spear if I could.
